Q How was the experience of a Native American attempting to assimilate into American society different than that of an immigrant from Europe trying to the same?
Native Americans were forcefully assimilated into American society but an immigrant coming from Europe had to put in effort to become an American society. It was told that if the Indian in the Native American was killed then only the Native American man can be saved. A US cavalry captain Richard Henry Pratt told the above lines. Captain Pratt opened a boarding school in Carlisle, Pennsylvania which was among the firsts where tens of thousands of Native American children were kept and were told not to use their language, follow their culture and practice their religion. The children were given Anglo-American names and were told to give new haircuts (2019).
